Barbara Caruso Kuper passed away peacefully at her home in Slidell on Sunday, May 8, 2016.
She was 65 years old.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Frank S. and Josephine D. Vitale Caruso; and her sister, Angela Caruso Campagna.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Philip; step-son, Forrest; brothers, Salvatore “Sam” (Martha) Caruso and Peter (Cindy) Caruso; brother-in-law, Ronald F. Campagna; and nieces and nephews, Mary Martha (Robb) Melancon, Kristine (Christopher) Black, Salvatore “Sammy” (Anna) Caruso Jr. and Ronald T. Campagna.
Barbara graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Nursing from LSU Medical Center, School of Nursing. She was an RN for 43 years, and worked in nearly every clinical aspect of nursing at one time or another. She worked at Riveroaks, New Orleans VA, and Touro Infirmary. She was on the faculty at LSUMC School of Nursing for 20 years, and a Hospice nurse for seven years prior to her illness. She held numerous additional credentials, and was a Nationally Certified Bereavement Facilitator.
Barbara was a member of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. She received the first Allen A. Copping Excellence in Teaching award from the School of Nursing; the Dr. Ernst Lederle Award for Excellence in Research, Education and Patient Care; the Northshore District Nurses Association Nursing Excellence Award; the Outstanding Clinical Practice Award, Touro Infirmary; and the Dedication to Lupus Patients Award.
She was trained as an End-of-Life Nursing Educator through an award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She was included in the 100 Great Nurses.
Nursing was not just a profession to Barbara; it was her calling—in her DNA. She will be fondly remembered as the wonderful nurse who took care of both her patients and their families; perceptive in assessment, tenacious and determined, diligent in treatment, with a wonderful depth of compassion that did not wane with the years. She believed a vital part of nursing was to serve as an advocate and she was fully committed to this role. Throughout Barbara’s life and career, she touched the lives of many, including her patients, students, colleagues, family, and friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend memorial services, one of which will be held on Saturday, May 21 at St Genevieve Church in Slidell, 58203 Hwy. 433. Visitation and remembrances will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.; Mass will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a reception.
A second service will be held on Saturday June 11, at the Lutheran Church of the Pines in Waveland, Ms., 309 Hwy. 90, Waveland. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m.; the service will be held at 11 a.m.; and a reception will follow.

Frida Helen Hunt Boyd passed away peacefully in her Needham, MA home on May 12, 2016.
She was 87 years old.
She was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas, attending high school both there and in Fayetteville, AR. In 1945, she met James “Jimmy” Sterling Boyd at the University of Arkansas and they were married in 1946. They established a consulting engineering firm in Shreveport and Slidell where they lived until moving to Florida in 1970. She moved and settled in MA in 1992 to help raise grandchildren.
She is survived by her brother, Fred W. Hunt, of Little Rock, AR; sister, Charleen Green of Palm City, FL; daughters, Judy (Tim) McElwain of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Sherri (Eric) Boyd Amundson of Gainesville, FL; sons J. Roark (Barbara) Boyd of Merlin, OR, Brett (Christine) Hunt Boyd of St. Augustine, FL and Saudi Arabia, and J. Wesley (Theonia) Boyd of Needham, MA; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death in 1972 by her beloved husband, Jimmy. Her parents and three of her sisters also preceded her.
The family greatly appreciated the services of VNA Hospice and Home Staff.
A service was held at Congregational Church of Needham on May 15 starting 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Capital Campaign Fund for Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Avenue, Needham, MA 02492 or Alachua Conservation Trust/Conservation Burial, Inc., 7204 SE County Road 234, Gainesville, FL 32641.

Jack R. Worgan, from Slidell, passed away at home May 12, 2016.
He was 88 years old.
He is survived by his children, Cathy Worgan Bort (Mark), Paul Worgan, Richard Worgan, Nancy Worgan Willman (Joseph), Kenneth Worgan (Tammy); and extended family.
Jack was a native of Pittsburg, Penn. and resided in Slidell. He was a recipient of multiple master degrees and worked as an aerospace mechanical engineer with NASA.
A visitation was held on Monday, May 16 at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport. The funeral service was at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with burial at Free Church of God Cemetery following the service.
